When it comes into force the Water Amendment Bill 2015 (Cth) will amend the Water Act 2007 (Cth) to introduce a threshold limit on Commonwealth water purchase agreements. Surface water purchases in the Murray-Darling Basin will be limited to 1500 gigalitres. The imposed limit is hoped to minimise water recovery through Government buybacks promoted by the Murray Darling Basin Plan (2012) and instead endorse infrastructure investment. This is in keeping with the key intentions of the Murray Darling Basin Plan (2012) to maintain adaptive management processes.
