Environment and Infrastructure Legislation Amendment (Stop Adani) Bill 2017 (Cth)
A private members bill has been introduced to Parliament that seeks to stop the development of the coal pit-to-coast railway line in Queensland through a concessional loan that is currently being considered by the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund (NAIF). The bill will achieve this by introducing an additional test to qualify an applicant for funding known as the suitable person test. The test would require the NAIF to consult with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission to examine the character of the applicant and examine poor past practice regarding development and uncommercial dealings. The bill would also trigger immediate review of the environmental approvals for the Adani mine, rail and port.
