State of the Energy Market 2017 Report

The Australian Energy Regulator today released its energy market overview. The report found that the National Energy Market and Eastern Australian Gas Network must work towards balancing accessibility and security. Key issues regarding under resourced domestic market and strong regulations were found to be impacting on reasonable pricing for consumers resulting in an increasing uptake of rooftop solar that now contributes to about 4% of the National Electricity Market supply. The closures of coal plants have also increased the reliance on renewable energy sources with generation capacity being reduced but not equally replaced. This lowering of supply has highlighted issues of energy security and consistent supply. The National Electricity Market is responsible for electricity supply across the southern and eastern areas of Australia where generators supply the market and retailers distribute electricity to retailers under the Australian Energy Market Operator.
