Social Considerations to be Integrated into NSW State Significant Projects

The NSW Government has released the draft social impact assessment guidelines for State Significant Projects which relates to mining, petroleum and extractive industries. Currently, the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (NSW) requires social impacts to be considered as part of the development assessment process. The guidelines aim to improve the implementation of social assessments.  Last week the Victorian State Government tabled the Inquiry into Unconventional Gas Development in the South East of South Australia which recommended against the growth of the unconventional gas industry in South East South Australia because of projects are unsupported by communities.

The guidelines are currently open for public comment until March 2017.
