The Senate Committee on Environment and Communications has released its report into offshore oil and gas production in the Great Australian Bight. The committee was originally commissioned to weigh the cost-benefit of BP’s proposed offshore drilling in the region. BP has since revoked its application for a licence to do so. The Committee therefore looked at the benefits and risks associated with offshore drilling the Bight. All parties recognised a need for greater consultation to take place between NOPSEMA as the industry regulator, and the public, particularly with regard to public awareness about oil spill response plans. The Australian Greens recommended there be greater statutory protection for the exploration and extraction of offshore gas in the Great Australia Bight Marine National Park.
