SA Parliament Seeks to Protect Energy Consumers

The South Australian Parliament is currently debating the National Electricity (South Australia) (Australian Energy Regulator—Wholesale Market Monitoring) Amendment Bill 2016 (SA) and Statutes Amendment (National Electricity and Gas Laws—Information Collection and Publication) Bill 2016 (SA). The Bills are attempting to protect South Australian energy consumers from unfair conduct by energy providers. The Bills grant additional powers to the Australian Energy Regulator, who is the key overseeing body of market.

The Melbourne Energy Institute recently released a research based report into the energy market in South Australia, and particularly looked at the factors contributing the 2016 July price spike – an event which catalysed the development of these Bills.
