The Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Bill 2016 (QLD) passed Queensland Parliament last week. The primary action of the Bill will be to prohibit fly-in fly-out (FIFO) for large resource projects in the state. The intention is to boost employment in communities local to such projects. A resource project is considered to be large if an Environmental Impact Statement is required as set out under Environmental Protection Act 1994 (QLD) s 37. Currently, only two in fifty large resource projects have a workforce that is completely made up of FIFO workers.
