Queensland Introduces Mediation as First Step to Solving Farming Debt

Today the Farm Business Debt Mediation Bill 2016 was introduced into the Queensland Parliament. The Bill seeks to establish mediation as the primary dispute resolution method between mortgagees and farmers. Following government consultation, $36 million will be directed toward reducing financial stress and improving financial sustainability of the rural sector under the Rural Assistance Package.

The Bill also offers an omnibus of amendments including biosecurity amendments and changes to the Drug Misuse Act 1986 (1986) which will enable growers of cannabis to participate in the Commonwealth licencing system for the cultivation of medicinal cannabis.
