Environmental Protection (Underground Water Management) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 has passed through both houses of Queensland Parliament. The Act will facilitate the unregulated taking of groundwater by resource companies. Estimations of groundwater use will be required to be provided during the Environmental Impact Assessment, however no separate licencing scheme exists to compel accountability of groundwater take.
