The Northern Territory Government has approved the Jemena Northern Gas Pipeline Project and an associated Compressor Facility. The Government made their decision based on an Environmental Impact Statement provided by the proponent and independent review by the Northern Territory Protection Authority. The project’s Environmental Management Plan can be read here.
The pipeline, which is 622 km long, will stretch across the Northern Territory and Queensland and is intended supply gas from Northern Territory gas fields by 2018. However, the approval comes at a time when the Northern Territory maintains a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing of onshore unconventional gas reservoirs with an Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracturing in the Northern Territory currently underway. The moratorium will remain in place until the Inquiry’s report is handed down.
