NSW Government Begins Local Council Amalgamation Process

The NSW Legislative Council has heard the reasoning for the Local Government Amendment (Governance and Planning) Bill 2016. The proposed Bill is a part of the broader state government scheme to amalgamate local councils into larger bodies with the purpose of creating representative local bodies relevant to modern Australia. This Bill introduces principle based governance into council roles as the key method to inform local government decision making. Transparency of local government will be enhanced, by requirements of independent auditing, risk and improvement committees. It will also reshape the governance structure of local councils and extend their current regulation-making powers. The Bill is currently before the Legislative Council and can be read in full here.
