Northern Territory Water Allocation Laws to Include Mining Extraction

Water allocation in the Northern Territory will now include extraction attributable to mining, which has previously not been a statutory consideration under s 7 Water Act 1992 (NT). The abolishment of these exemptions for gas and oil mining companies will ensure a realistic understanding of the demands of water across industry and domestic uses. This mirrors the Oil and Gas Industry Development Strategy which seeks greater regulation with regards to natural resource exploration and development. Public comment on this strategy is open until 31st December 2015.
