Inquiry into the Retirement of Coal Fired Power Stations Interim Report Released

The Senate Committee on Environment and Communications released its interim report in the retirement of coal fired power stations yesterday. The committee was tasked with investigating just policy mechanisms to encourage the closure of coal fired power sources across Australia underpinned by social and economic considerations for industry workers. In the Interim Report, the committee recommended that

  • The Government create an energy transition plan
  • The Government engage key stakeholders to produce a mechanism which is to be presented COAG Energy Council
  • The Government should adopt National Electricity Objectives that are consistent with the Paris Agreement
  • The Government should create a statutory energy transition body responsible for the management of the clean energy transition mechanism
