Victoria Looks to a Future with Renewables

The Economic, Education, Jobs and Skills Committee has tabled their Inquiry into Community Energy Projects in Victoria. The Inquiry had a mandate to investigate the community energy projects in Victoria from developing incentive schemes, to looking at best practice models including the potential role of co-operatives, mutuals, social enterprises and community ownership in the energy sector. The report found community, developers and local government collaborations were the most efficient way to encourage community energy projects. Barriers to projects included policy uncertainty, regulatory restrictions, technical issues and a shortage of funding and resources. The Report can be read in full here.

The Renewable Energy (Jobs and Investment) Bill 2017 (Vic) has passed parliament. The Act introduces renewable energy targets for the state of Victoria. The renewable energy target under the legislation is set at 25% by 2020 and 40% by 2025. The Bill will support investment in the renewables industry in the State with a particular focus on large-scale means of production.
