Commonwealth Private Members Busy with Diversity of New Bills Tabled

  • Live Animal Export (Slaughter) Prohibition Bill 2017

A Private Members Bill has been introduced to the Senate that seeks to prohibit the export of livestock for slaughter.

  • Commission of Inquiry (Coal Seam Gas) Bill 2017

Private Federal Member of the House of Representatives Bob Katter Jr, has introduced the Commission of Inquiry (Coal Seam Gas) Bill 2017 (Cth) into Parliament today. The Bill will commission an inquiry into the social, economic and environmental consequences of unconventional gas extraction across Australia. This will include looking at the power imbalance between landholders and coal seam gas companies.

The inquiry will also enquire into the connection between the industry and government agencies as well as donations from industry companies to government. Regulatory and procedural amendments such as shifting the onus of proof regarding damage will also be examined.

  • Renewable Energy (Electricity) Amendment (Continuing the Energy Transition) Bill 2017

A Private Members Bill has been introduced to the House of Representatives that would amend the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act 2000 (Cth) so as to continue increases to the Renewable Energy Target until 2030. Currently, increases to the target end in 2020, with the target fixed at 33 000 GWh. The Bill sets out successive increases in renewable energy sources between 2021 to 2030 which will see the target rise to 55 500 GWh by 2030.
