Coal Seam and Other Unconventional Gas Moratorium Bill 2015

A Bill seeking to place a moratorium on the exploration and mining of coal seam or unconventional gas is currently before the New South Wales Legislative Council. If passed, the Bill would criminalise the exploration or mining of coal seam or unconventional gas under s 7 of the Petroleum (Onshore) Act 1991 (NSW). Current rights to exploration and mining of coal seam or unconventional gas would become ineffectual. ‘No go zones’ recognised in Schedule One of the Bill identify environmentally, socially and economically significant areas where a moratorium lifting order cannot be issued by the Minister. The full Bill can be found here: http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/parlment/nswbills.nsf/0/ccb9a3a4b6eacb1bca257eac002913c6/$FILE/63337006.pdf/b2015-084-d05-House.pdf
