Carmichael Coal Mine Re-Approved by Federal Minister for the Environment

The controversial underground and open cut mine by Adani Mining Pty Ltd has been re-approved by the Federal Environment Minister under s 130(1) and s 133 of Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth). Approval for the associated rail link has also been granted. The proposed Carmichael coal mine was subject to a successful Federal Court Challenge earlier this year. The case turned on the Environment Minister’s failure to properly account for the impact of the mine on endangered species when approving the project. The proposal has been reapproved this week with additional compliance requirements. Reasons for the Minister’s re-approval decision can be found here:
