Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Amendment Bill 2015 (Cth)
Amendments to the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth) have passed the Senate this week. The amendments will seek greater indigenous engagement and leadership with regards to decision-making about their communities. The amendments emphasize this decision making will largely involve the economic development of indigenous communities. These amendments reiterate the Government’s intentions regarding the commercialisation of indigenous communities in the White Paper on Developing Northern Australia released in June 2015. The White Paper proposed native title bodies should assume a greater role in negotiation with businesses as a method for indigenous economic opportunity and security of land tenure. These amendments will encourage such responsibilities.
