Tasmanian Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal People Inches Closer to Law

The Constitutional Amendment (Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal People) Bill 2016 (Tas) seeks to amend the preamble of the Constitution of Tasmania to provide for the recognition of Aboriginal people as Tasmania’s First People, who are the traditional and original owners of Tasmanian land and water. It provides for the ongoing recognition of Aboriginal People in Tasmania. The Bill has been read for a third time in the Legislative Council.
