Queensland Water Transfer Scheme Passes Both Houses

The Water (Local Management Arrangements) Amendment Bill 2016 (QLD) seeks to amend the Water Act 2000 (QLD) to establish a transfer scheme that will facilitate the transfer of water from SunWater to local irrigators. This transfer of water will also see a transfer of responsibility and management to irrigators rather than the government-owned SunWater. This will be introduced through a series of legislative insertions into the Water Act 2000 (QLD) and regulations. The issue of land tenure supporting the scheme sees the amendments introduce new perpetual leases for channel infrastructure. This Bill has passed both Houses and awaits proclamation before commencing.
