NSW Bill Seeks to Ban Coal Mines

The Private Member’s Mining Amendment (Climate Protection—No New Coal Mines) Bill 2016 was introduced last week into the Legislative Council and seeks to amend the Mining Act 1992 (NSW) to prohibit the grant of new authorisations to prospect or mine coal. The amendment will not permit compensation payable by the state because of any loss caused by the prohibition. Existing and renewal of authorisations will continue to be possible.
