The Federal Government has given the environmental approval required for Project Sea Dragon in Northern Australia. The approval was given with conditions attached in order to protect vulnerable species in the region and additional impacts such as wastewater and noise pollution. The first stage of the project will increase Australia’s total prawn production by 55% with large proportions of produce to be exported, facilitated by Free Trade Agreements between Australia and Asia. The primary site hosts a breeding centre, maturation centre and hatchery. Additional sites host the grow-out facility, a processing plant and finally the export facilities. The proponent, Seafarms, will rely on concessional loans from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund. Find out more here.
