Last week, the Senate referred an inquiry into the Murray-Darling Basin to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Committee. The Inquiry will investigate claims of theft and corruption in the management of the Murray-Darling Basin, including the actions, or lack thereof, of both state governments and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority. The Inquiry will also investigate the use of environmental water, which has been purchased by the Federal Government with public money, for irrigation purposes. The Committee is currently receiving submissions until 28 September 2017 and is due to Report on its findings by 5 December 2017.
Federal Government Acquires Environmental Water for the Basin
The Commonwealth Government has acquired 28 GL of water in the Condamine-Balonne area. The buyback is intended to add to environmental water levels in the region and is working toward the water recovery target under the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
