The Parliament of South Australia Natural Resources Committee – Inquiry into Unconventional Gas Development in the South East of South Australia has tabled its final report, two years after the inquiry was initially commissioned. The report found that as ‘a social licence does not yet exists for the development of an unconventional gas industry in the South East’ of South Australia unconventional gas should not be pursued in the area. The report cited diverse community concerns regarding climate change, the increased investment in renewable energy, the export market, and general public opinion to be against unconventional gas exploration. The report also recommended amendments to the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2000 (SA) to integrate social concerns into the planning process.
