Climate Change Bill before Victorian Parliament

The Climate Change Bill 2016 (Vic) has passed the Legislative Assembly and will be debated in the Legislative Council when parliament resumes in 2017. The bill integrates the recommendations from the Independent Review of the Climate Change Act 2010. The reforms include

  • re-establishing an ambitious long (2050) and intermediate, reviewable term targets to guide policy creation
  • integrating forest carbon rights as an independent interest in land
  • legislating for carbon sequestration agreements, and
  • codifing guiding principles for decision making by integrating climate change considerations.
