Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Board Reforms in SA

The Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights (Miscellaneous) Amendment Act 2016 (SA) will update the governance structure of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Board and election process. The Bill was preceded by an independent review into the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 (SA) which formally governed the structure of the Land Rights body. This review included ongoing consultation with Anangu, including site visits, and formed the basis of the reform. The Act will redistribute governance power to the electorate and require gender balance, local representatives and “electability” criteria for the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Board.
